Richard's Caterham
Welcome to the realm of my Caterham Super Seven!
The Caterham Seven is a British sports car whose origins date back to
1957. Originally designed by Colin Chapman of Lotus, the Lotus Seven
evolved through Series I to Series IV before worldwide production rights
were transferred to Caterham Cars in 1973. Caterham embraced the Series
III and continue to develop it to this day as the Caterham Super Seven.
The Caterham is renown as being one of the best handling sports cars in production, despite it's
40-year heritage. Billed in the
1960s as "too fast to race" by the RAC, the current flagship model - the Caterham R500 Evo - currently
holds the production car world record for the 0-100mph-0 acceleration/braking test. Yup, faster than any
Ferrari. Get in! :-)
My much more modest Caterham was built in 1990 - sadly not by me, but as soon as funds permit
then a kit build of my own is in order! It was initially powered by a 1600
Ford Kent Crossflow engine, which would have produced about 115bhp at the
flywheel, enough to take it from 0-60mph in about 6.5 seconds. 1997 saw
the upgrade of the engine to an 1800 Crossflow - dyno'd at 118bhp at the wheels,
equating to roughly 150bhp at the flywheel. 60mph now arrives in
around 5 seconds, with the onset of a manic grin in advance even of that!
This site should evolve over the months to provide a
record of my ownership of the Cat - for now it is the home of these photos:
... and these piccies of a Caterham Slalom Day that I did at Dunsfold - the home of the Top Gear test track. Cracking fun, thoroughly recommended; it consists of
a day's worth of hammering a Caterham around various slalom courses, with each run finished with an obligatory donut! The only minor
prob was that I only came second... damn you Mister Elkins! :-)
... and these piccies of a fantastic Bacon Roll Blat that we did down to Rye one Sunday morning. Thanks to Rich W and Rob K for a
top morning's drive - awesome stuff. I really will get round to organising this website better soon, honest... :-)
